Unfortunately downloading online videos is rarely as easy as clicking on a link. Because most online videos are BEING streamed in some form or other, very often there is simply no link to click on.
The good news is that it is still possible to download online videos, and in fact there are several methods that you could use. The bad news is that none are perfect, so you may want to look into each of them individually.
Browser extensions are available on most popular browsers, and essentially are small software modules that provide additional features. In this case you will want to look for browser extensions that let you download videos from websites.
The range of options that are available to you will depend on the browser that you’re using. Some browsers such as Chrome and Firefox generally have a lot more extensions than others.
Be sure to pay close attention to any limitations that may be present. In general there are two types of browser extensions: The kind that only support specific platforms, or the kind that attempt to detect the video source in the webpage that you’re on.
It should be noted that because it works solely within your browser, you cannot download online videos form within apps using this method.
Web-Based Tools and Services
Another popular option to download online videos is by using one of the many web-based tools and services that are available to do so. Typically these platforms are referred to as video downloader sites – because that is quite literally what they do.
In general most web-based tools work the same way, and you will need to copy and paste the URL of the webpage, wait for it to be processed, then click on the download link.
Just as with browser extensions, some tools still will only support certain platforms while others are more diverse. On top of that this method cannot download videos from within apps either.
It may seem odd to see screen recorders such as Movavi Screen Recorder listed as an option, but it is actually one that has grown in popularity. Technically it won’t ‘download’ the video however, but will let you save it by recording it while it plays on your screen.
Because it records videos from your screen, you can use a screen recorder to save any online video whatsoever. That includes videos on any websites, platforms, or apps. In fact it encompasses all types of online videos such as live videos and ephemeral content as well.
The one disadvantage of using screen recording is the time that it takes. When you learn how to record streaming video you’ll very quickly realize that the entire video needs to play for it to be recorded. Typically downloading a video of the same duration will take less time – though it depends on your internet speed.
In short this is the most versatile and universal option, but it is also the most time-consuming.
Aside from the options written above, there are different desktop apps that will let you download videos as well. Generally these work similarly to either browser extensions or video downloader websites.
All in all it will be safe to say that you should definitely be able to download any online video using one of the options listed above. That being said it is up to you to decide which you prefer, and which can download the type of videos that you want.
To be honest if you have the time it may be best to try each one out and see for yourself exactly how it works.
